What Is Eriksson & McClaren’s Championship Legacy?

"No, Sven. My Joker impression is much better than yours."

One of this season’s strangest moments came when we realised that both Steve McClaren and Sven-Goran Eriksson would be lining up against each other as club managers. Not in the glorious cauldron of the much-hyped Premier League or even on exotic shores (like Germany) but in the nPower Championship, titans of the managerial world flipping each other off across twenty-two other teams which all shared the same ambition. Get promoted and, for god’s sake, don’t bring in Billy Davies as your manager.

Much has been made over the last few days about Eriksson’s managerial ability, with many claiming that his inexperience at a lower level counted against him as he tried to launch big-spending Leicester into the automatic promotion spots. Indeed, there isn’t much to argue about that, Eriksson has no experience of trying to bring a club up from a lower league, unless you count his work with Degerfors IF in the late seventies which, quite frankly, you shouldn’t.

Just Exactly How Boring Are Wolves?

Wolves Even Bore This Actual Wolf

It’s not the most glamorous of clubs. In fact you think of Wolves, you see this tawdry gold strip and average players masquerading as Premier League footballers. For all of Sky’s promotion of the big Manchester derby, tucked away on a Saturday afternoon were Wolves entertaining Swansea. No adverts, no mention and deservedly so. Mick McCarthy’s side display a brand of football which couldn’t cure insomnia. Boring would be a compliment to the West Midland side which lacks any enterprise and quality.

Not only is it the gold strip which makes you think Wolves were fashionable in the 80s but they come from Wolverhampton. Has anyone been to Wolverhampton recently? If you’ve been in the last twenty years, you’ve probably not missed much. The Black Country is apparently a hidden gem in the Midlands, inasmuch as Alan Titchmarsh is a hidden gem on television.

Teddy’s View: Stuart Pearce’s British Boys, Scrapping The Relegation Scrap & Something About

Pearce Is The Man To Lead The English... Sorry... British In 2012

DNA tests have been riding high in the news this week. No doubt there will have to be some done on what’s assumed to be the body of Muammar Gaddafi, but it’s also emerged that one unnamed English Premier League club has carried out DNA tests on their players to gauge which would be most prone to injury. Footballers have understandably expressed concerns over this, in case the information can be used against them. In paternity cases.

Stuart Pearce’s appointment as manager of the British men’s Olympic football team for 2012 saw his name trending on Twitter yesterday, just below those of Colonel Gaddafi and Osama Bin Laden. The same position he assumed on most Scots’ short-lists for the job. To be fair to Pearce, he does have some chance of attracting Scottish players to the side. After all, he managed most of them when they played for England U21s…

An Interview With… Jane Lewis – The Face Of Scottish Sport?

Jane Lewis is a familiar face to sports fans across the UK, and to those in Scotland in particular. While appearing on Radio Scotland’s Keep Off The Grass with our man Teddy a few years ago, she was even helpful enough to try to assist him in arranging an interview with one of his idols, Charlie Miller. The skill-endowed, fitness-challenged midfield maverick may have said no to that interview, but Jane was good enough to say yes to the interview below. Remember to follow her on Twitter, @JaneLewisSport.

You were the main sports presenter on STV’s Scotland Today show for years – take us through how you got to that stage…

After working at BBC local radio stations in Berkshire and Cleveland I moved to Sky News in London which was a huge jump in every possible way. I loved Sky but had a real urge to ‘come home’! This is where fate comes in! My cousin was on a train in Glasgow for the first time in years and she saw a newspaper (one she never usually reads) lying on a seat she started reading it. She happened to see that STV were looking for a sports reporter and presenter for Scotland Today! She called me and from there I applied for the job. I remember flying up for the interview after presenting the sport on the early morning news show for Sky and was really tired but obviously did ok in the interview!

Teddy’s View: Tartan Army Woe, Worthington Goes & Something About Carlos Tevez’s Fine

You're Far Too Good, Now Go Away And Think About What You've Done

Spain and the Czech Republic did the Tartan Army a favour on Tuesday night by getting rid of any lingering hopes so speedily. Going into the 90th minute nursing a genuine sense of belief is always a bit more of a fucker. As it was, it didn’t take long before Spain were winning and Lithuania were losing. It was never realistic to think that Lithuania would do Scotland a favour – not after Scotland gave them Craig Thomson. The use of other territories as a penal colony tends to create a negative feeling about a country. At least until everybody learns to surf and cheers up.

Spain’s display meant it wasn’t just the Scottish players who had to be patient, but also the Spanish. You could see some of them getting bored and thinking “this one-touch passing move has gone on for ages – let’s just pump it long, eh?”. Or perhaps not. Still, it was a performance that even Scots couldn’t help but admire. Particularly Levein-skeptic Steven Fletcher, who probably toasted each goal with a swig of San Miguel, a mouthful of Manchego cheese, and a cuddle of a toy donkey draped in a Spanish flag. Scotland fans retain a dream though…of going to see their team at a major finals event and taking a tram to airport to get there…
